Once the summer transfer-window deadline has passed, it can be easy to assume that all player movement has ended.

French Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais announced that it would transfer Belgium international forward Malick Fofana to Sunderland. According to Lyon’s announcement, as reported by the BBC, the fee could reach as much as 3천500 million euros, including 500 million euros in bonuses, with a possible additional clause entitling Lyon to 12.5% of any future transfer proceeds. Here, the maximum amount is the announced possible amount including bonuses; it does not mean that all bonuses have been triggered.
A player’s contract status is also a dividing line in the market. USA Today explained that players whose contracts with their clubs have ended can sign freely with any club. In that case, a player can choose and sign with a new club regardless of whether a particular league’s transfer window is open.
The situation is different for players who still have contracts with their current clubs. Even if the window of the receiving league is open, a deal between the clubs and the player’s consent may be required. Therefore, September 1 was a major deadline for Europe’s major leagues, but it was not the end of all player movement in soccer.
