Changwon National University and Konyang University have announced plans to connect artificial intelligence education with industry collaboration.
One is pursuing a contract-based enrollment system linking undergraduate selection with graduate-school advancement and recruitment, while the other is promoting joint research and field training with companies.
More important than the name “AI-centered university” is the education, research, and recruitment pathway that students will actually encounter.
3-Line Summary
1. University AI education is expanding into industry collaboration
2. Changwon National University will invest 177억원 over 6 years
3. Agreements and recruitment are not the same stage
Changwon National University’s pathway begins in the third year of undergraduate study
Changwon National University announced that it received its selection plaque and began pursuing the project at the launch ceremony for the Ministry of Science and ICT’s AX Graduate School on October 6. AX means artificial intelligence transformation, and the university plans to invest 177억원 over 6 years, with Hanwha Aerospace serving as its joint research and development institution. Gyeongsangnam-do and Changwon Special City have also agreed to provide 3억원 each.
The notable aspect of this project is that it designs education and recruitment as a single pathway. Changwon National University and Hanwha Aerospace signed a memorandum of understanding for talent development and recruitment links and will operate a contract-based enrollment system. The structure involves selecting 10 industry-sponsored scholarship students from among third-year undergraduates, providing scholarship benefits and company-linked education beginning in the fourth year, and connecting 5 students who complete the bachelor’s-master’s linked program to recruitment.
Students are expected to participate in joint projects based on companies’ real-world data and recruitment-linked internships, while Hanwha Aerospace specialists are scheduled to serve as adjunct faculty and lead joint lectures and instruction. However, this is an operating plan announced by the university and the company. Selection, completion of the program, and recruitment connections are future procedures and should not be understood as an outcome meaning that all students will be hired.
A graduate-school track tailored to defense AI
Changwon National University announced that it will establish the D.AX (Defense AI Transformation) track in its general graduate school. The plan assigns defense operations innovation AX to the Department of AI Convergence Engineering and defense manufacturing innovation AX to the Major in Control and Instrumentation Engineering. It also presented the goal of selecting at least 50 students each year beginning in 2027 and training at least 250 master’s- and doctoral-level professionals.
For education and demonstration, the university plans to use the on-campus EON Building, the Institute of Artificial Intelligence, the TUG Campus unmanned mobility demonstration complex, and the AI Robot Operation Center (AROC), which is scheduled for completion at the end of this year. The strategy appears to place university education in close proximity to Changwon National Industrial Complex, a concentration of the defense and machinery industries. Here as well, the targets for personnel and facility use are project objectives, so they need to be distinguished from achievements already attained.
Konyang University begins collaboration with joint development with companies
Konyang University’s AI-Centered University Project Group announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding with LogosAI, an AI platform development company, on October 7, to cultivate specialized talent and create an AX ecosystem. It is the first industry-academia cooperation agreement pursued by Konyang University after its selection as an AI-centered university.
The agreement covers joint research and development of generative AI-based solutions and algorithms, technical consultation and academic exchange, student field training and employment links, joint use of education and research facilities and demonstration testbeds, and joint development of major curricula tailored to industry demand. A demonstration testbed is a space or environment where technologies or services are tested and validated under conditions similar to those of an actual environment.
LogosAI was introduced as a company that researches and develops a generative AI platform for closed networks, built and operated independently without external connections, as well as customized sovereign chatbot technology for enterprises. Konyang University plans to combine its specialized capabilities in medicine and national defense with AI and build education and research infrastructure based on its own data center. However, what can be confirmed at this stage is the signing of the agreement and the areas of cooperation. This is not yet a stage at which the results of joint development or student employment outcomes have emerged.
The announcements by the two universities show that AI education is beginning to treat how it connects with corporate data, field training, research facilities, and graduate programs as a source of competitiveness, rather than ending with an expanded list of lectures. For students, the more practical standard is to separately confirm the selection criteria, the actual participation process, and the conditions for recruitment links, rather than relying on the label “AI education.”
