In late September, the conflict over the survival of the police organization in “Bongnudo2” ultimately escalated into the Police Headquarters War.
The greater change than the outcome of the gunfight was that the story concluded with the police giving up their existing authority and duty to respond to calls.
Why did even the losing side cheer, and why did this conclusion lead into the server’s epilogue?
3-Line Summary
1. The Bongnudo2 Police Headquarters War ended with an anti-police faction victory
2. Go Sangsik returned, while O Patrol stepped down as police chief
3. The remaining issue was the burden of the role, rather than the war
The Day an Inauguration Ceremony Became a Police Headquarters Siege
The GTA5 role-playing server Bongnudo2, operated on Chzzk, is a space where streamers create stories by taking on roles such as police officers, gang members, and civilians. According to Gameple’s report, in late September, Police Chief Go Sangsik considered stopping clashes with the gangs and giving up the police organization as well. However, O Patrol, who wanted to keep the police in place, staged a coup, became the new chief, and once again declared a “war on crime.”
In an earlier report on September 29, Kyunghyang Games reported that O Patrol’s side had proposed a plan to establish the foundation for engaging in gunfights with gangs as well, while City Hall planned to consider providing parts or easing conditions to reduce inconvenience for gun manufacturers. These were the plans and positions at the time, and the actual conclusion later changed into a battle at the Police Headquarters.
During O Patrol’s inauguration ceremony, the anti-police faction occupied the Police Headquarters. When the returning police launched an attempt to retake it, the battle continued through the underground parking lot, stairways, and rooftop. Gameple reported that the fighting continued even after the server was restarted because many people had gathered in one place. Ultimately, the police failed to retake the Police Headquarters, and O Patrol stepped down as chief. Go Sangsik returned, and victory in the battle went to the anti-police faction.
Why “Disbanding the Police” Instead Prompted Cheers
The demands put forward by the gang alliance after the war included demoting all police officers to Level 3 citizens, converting the Police Headquarters into a private crime prevention patrol, and eliminating their existing authority and duty to respond to calls. Conditions that would make the defeated police uncomfortable were also discussed, such as using the northern gym, participating in pursuits involving certain vehicles, and completing challenges equipped with gear.
What drew the strongest reaction from the police side, however, was the abolition of their authority and duty to respond to calls. Gameple explained that the Bongnudo2 police were called out whenever an incident occurred and were responsible for continuing into vehicle pursuits after PVE ended. Even when the people going to the scene and those providing support over the radio were separate, a considerable portion of the day could be tied up in police work when the time spent waiting for the next call was included.
The gangs also had to gather resources and money and consider their relationships with other organizations in order to prepare firearms. Gameple described how, as the server continued, participants came to think first about what they had to do that day rather than what they wanted to do. From this perspective, the war’s conclusion was not simply a defeat, but a scene in which everyone also laid down the burden of roles that had to be continuously maintained.
Relationships That Continued as the “Sangsik Crime Prevention Patrol” Instead of Ranks
Rather than scattering the people who had been with him, Go Sangsik chose to create a crime prevention patrol so they could continue spending time together while giving up only the police’s obligations. Gameple reported that the Police Headquarters used titles such as right arm, left arm, right foot, and left foot instead of ranks, and that the salute was also changed to “Joon~gang.”
The anti-police faction won the war, but O Patrol, who tried to protect the police organization, and Go Sangsik, who sought to free people from their obligations, were alike in wanting to keep their colleagues together. Thus, Bongnudo2’s final phase was not the complete departure of either the police or the gangs, but a transition into an epilogue in which each side concluded its story after reducing authority and obligations.
After the war, the circumstances surrounding the 35 eok (3.5 billion won) in police funds that Mok Jinap had withdrawn and kept in storage were also revealed. According to Gameple’s report, he had taken the money out with the possibility of defeat in mind, and after the war ended, his choice was explained as an effort to protect the funds from people outside who might try to take the money. Bongnudo2 still had several days remaining, but the time spent sorting out postponed relationships and stories had grown greater than the time spent preparing for the next war.
