Park Hye-jeong won the silver medal in the women’s heaviest weight class at the Asian Games held in Nagoya, Japan, on September 29.
Although she could not reach the gold medal, she set new personal Korean records in the snatch and total.
This was a stage where it was difficult to judge Park Hye-jeong’s performance by medal color alone.
3-Line Summary
1. Park Hye-jeong wins silver in the women’s heaviest weight class
2. Sets Korean records in the snatch and total
3. The medal and records should be viewed together
Second Place with a 133㎏ Snatch and a 300㎏ Total
At the weightlifting women’s 86㎏-and-over event at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, held at the Nagoya Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion Hall in Japan, Park Hye-jeong recorded a 133㎏ snatch, a 167㎏ clean and jerk, and a 300㎏ total. She finished in 2nd place.
The most notable record was in the snatch. Park Hye-jeong lifted 133㎏, setting a mark 2㎏ higher than the Korean record she had previously held. Her 300㎏ total was also a Korean record. Alongside the result of a silver medal, a record-breaking achievement in Korean women’s weightlifting also remained.
Park Hye-jeong won the gold medal at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games held in 2023. At this competition, she challenged for the first back-to-back Asian Games title in the history of Korean women’s weightlifting, but her second medal became a silver medal.
A Narrowed Championship Battle with Li Wenwen
Early in the competition, a three-way contest formed among Park Hye-jeong, Chinese weightlifter Li Wenwen, and Qatari weightlifter Waisal Eklef. Li Wenwen took the lead with a 140㎏ snatch, while Park Hye-jeong followed with 133㎏.
In the clean and jerk, Eklef fell out of the championship contest, narrowing the battle to the two athletes. Li Wenwen successfully lifted 170㎏ in her second attempt, recording a 310㎏ total. Park Hye-jeong had lifted 167㎏ in the clean and jerk in an earlier attempt, producing a 300㎏ total.
In her final, third attempt, Park Hye-jeong challenged her personal best in the clean and jerk, 173㎏. Although she could not lift the barbell, the Korean records she had already set in the snatch and total remained unchanged. According to a KBS report, after securing the gold medal, Li Wenwen finished the competition with a celebration in her final attempt without lifting the barbell.
Two Records Left by the Silver Medal
When considering this result, it is not enough to look only at the 310㎏ difference between Li Wenwen’s total and Park Hye-jeong’s 300㎏ total. Amid the championship battle, Park Hye-jeong raised her previous Korean records in both the snatch and total.
Although her final 173㎏ attempt was unsuccessful, she had already secured a new total record with her successful 167㎏ clean and jerk. Even though she did not achieve back-to-back Asian Games titles, Park Hye-jeong finished the competition after raising the standard of Korean women’s weightlifting once again.
