Seungmin Seong Set the First Record in the South Korean Women’s Individual Event
On September 20, Seungmin Seong won the women’s individual modern pentathlon event at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, held at Anjo Sports Park in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, with a total score of 1,492 points (1492). She became the first South Korean woman to win a gold medal in the individual modern pentathlon event at the Asian Games.
Modern pentathlon determines rankings through fencing, the obstacle event, swimming, and the laser run. The laser run combines running and shooting. In addition to her individual gold medal, Seungmin Seong also contributed to the women’s team silver medal alongside Eunju Kim and Sumin Shin.
In the men’s division, Woongtae Jeon, Jonghyun Lee, and Changwan Seo won the team event, in which individual-event results are combined. Woongtae Jeon won the individual silver medal, while Jonghyun Lee took the bronze. South Korea finished tied for first with China in modern pentathlon, winning 2 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal.
Obstacles Instead of Equestrian Riding; The Standard for Results Has Also Changed
This was the first Asian Games held after the obstacle event was introduced in modern pentathlon in place of the traditional equestrian event. Since the event lineup itself had changed, it was difficult to gauge athletes’ competitiveness based solely on past results.
National team coach Seongjin Kim assessed that the athletes performed well despite the situation in which many injuries occurred after the introduction of the obstacles. He explained that China showed strength in the obstacle event, while South Korea performed well in the laser run. There is reason to view this as more than an achievement measured only by the medal count: it was a result produced through the process of adapting to the changed events.
Woongtae Jeon had struggled at times during the process of adapting to the obstacle era, but he contributed to this individual silver medal and the team-event victory. Seungmin Seong’s individual victory also established that a South Korean woman had reached the top for the first time under the new format.
Preparation for the LA Olympics Is Still at the Planning Stage
The result at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, mentioned as the national team’s next goal, is not a confirmed outcome. Coach Kim identified improving obstacle performance and fencing skills, as well as the need for coaches specializing in obstacles, as tasks to address.
Coach Kim said that the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) is reviewing changes to the order of events and to the distance and number of obstacles on the course. Considering the possibility that the competition rules may change further, the medals at these Asian Games confirmed that South Korea was competitive under the new event lineup while also revealing areas requiring improvement.
