Everland’s baby giant panda Shu Bao received her name upon reaching 100 days of age.
Shu Bao is Fu Bao’s younger sister and the fourth daughter of Ai Bao and Le Bao.
The naming contest and vote were not merely a simple event; they were part of a process tied to the baby panda’s stage of growth.
3-Line Summary
1. Fu Bao’s younger sister Shu Bao has been given her name
2. Shu Bao received 42% of the final vote
3. A general public debut is still under consideration
Fu Bao’s Youngest Younger Sister, Born at 171g
Shu Bao is a female giant panda born on June 3 at Everland’s Panda World in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. She weighed 171g at birth and exceeded 5.5㎏ at around 100 days. She is the fourth naturally bred offspring of Ai Bao and Le Bao, following Fu Bao and the twin sisters Rui Bao and Hui Bao.
Because baby giant pandas are born with extremely small bodies, it is common to name them at around 100 days of age, when their health has stabilized. Fu Bao, Rui Bao, and Hui Bao were also named through public participation at around 100 days.
Shu Bao’s name was likewise announced on September 11, when she reached 100 days. Keepers reported that Shu Bao had opened her eyes and developed her eyesight, and that her teeth had begun to grow. It was also reported that she had begun sleeping on her own, apart from her mother, Ai Bao.
The Name Chosen by 42% Among 5 Candidates
Everland accepted name suggestions online for approximately two months. More than 1만 people participated, and Shu Bao, Jyu Bao, Jyun Bao, Lin Bao, and Yu Bao became the final candidates. In the online and offline vote, Shu Bao received 42%, the largest share of the votes.
The name “Shu Bao” carries the meaning a treasure as bright as dawn’s light. It uses “Bao,” which has continued through the panda family’s names, and the contest also reflected the criterion that the name should be easy to pronounce in both Korea and China.
Fu Bao moved to China in April 2024 and lives at the Shenshuping Base of the Wolong Chinese Giant Panda Garden. The announcement of the name gave visitors who remember Fu Bao an opportunity to learn about the newest member of the panda family growing up in Korea.
A Public Debut for Visitors This Year Has Not Been Decided
Everland stated that it is considering a plan to open Shu Bao to general visitors within the year after she goes through the process of adapting to the external environment. This is not an announcement that a public debut schedule has been finalized.
The confirmed change at this point is that Shu Bao has passed 100 days of age and is progressing through her growth stages. Her name being decided does not mean visitors can immediately see her, so the actual decision and timing of her public debut must be confirmed separately through Everland’s subsequent announcements.
