At the Nagoya Asian Games men’s 100m, Japan’s Shuhei Tada and Yuki Koike advanced through the heats.
The two athletes ran in different heats, while the fastest overall heat time was recorded by Thailand’s 20-year-old Puripol Boonson.
Advancing through the heats does not mean winning a medal, but a benchmark for the race against the clock in the semifinals on the 25th has already been set.
3-Line Summary
1. Tada and Koike advance to the men’s 100m semifinals
2. Boonson recorded 9 seconds 95 in the heats
3. The semifinals are scheduled for the 25th
Tada Runs 10 Seconds 41, Koike 10 Seconds 33
The athletics events at the 20th Asian Games will be held from September 23 to 29 at Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Track and field events began on September 24, and two Japanese athletes advanced to the next round in the men’s 100m heats.
Japanese championships winner Shuhei Tada (Sumitomo Electric) crossed the finish line third in his heat after recording 10 seconds 41 from lane 4 in Heat 6. Tada secured his place in the semifinals on the 25th. Yuki Koike (Sumitomo Electric) also advanced through the heats, recording 10 seconds 33 to finish second in Heat 2.
The top 3 finishers in each heat, along with the 6 fastest athletes by time, advance to the semifinals. The two athletes secured the right to continue competing in their individual event the following day. TBS NEWS DIG reported that Tada was selected for the national team after winning his second Japanese championships title in 5 years in June.
Thailand’s 20-Year-Old Boonson Records the Fastest Heat Time
The fastest time of the day was recorded by Thailand’s Puripol Boonson. The 20-year-old Boonson recorded 9 seconds 95 in Heat 1 and was the only participant in the heats to break into the 9-second range.
Tada and Koike’s times were sufficient to advance through the heats, but there was a gap compared with Boonson’s 9 seconds 95. In sprint events, the final result is not determined solely by heat rankings. For the two Japanese athletes, an important challenge in the semifinals will be whether they can advance while also narrowing the gap in times.
Japan’s men’s 100m is seeking an individual-event medal after Ryota Yamagata won a bronze medal at the 2018 Jakarta–Palembang Asian Games. Whether Japan will reach the medal positions at this competition has not yet been decided and will be determined by the semifinal and final results on the 25th.
The Women’s 10,000m and Field Events Also Begin on the 24th
On the same day, Nozomi Tanaka (Toyota Industries) was scheduled to compete in the women’s 10,000m final. Tanaka holds the Japanese records in the 1500m and 5000m and was entered in the 10,000m, 5000m, and 1500m at this competition. Ririka Hironaka (Uniqlo), who had been selected to represent Japan in the women’s 10,000m, withdrew because her condition adjustment was delayed.
In the field events, Akari Funada competed in the women’s triple jump final, while Koki Yugami and Yuji Tsutsumi competed in the men’s discus throw. In the mixed 4×400m relay, Japan advanced to the final after passing the morning heats with a time of 3 minutes 16 seconds 52, the fifth-fastest overall time. The athletics schedule that opened in Nagoya was a day when differences in times became clearly apparent, beginning with the sprint heats.
