Thailand Reach Final Despite Loss to Philippines, with Goal Difference Deciding Group Winner

Thailand’s national football team secured qualification for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 final despite losing to the Philippines.

In the final Group B match, held on October 2 at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, the Philippines won 2-1.

Goal difference built in an earlier match, rather than the result of the final match, preserved Thailand’s first place in the group.

3-Line Summary
1. Thailand lost 1-2 to the Philippines
2. Thailand lead Group B with 6 points
3. A higher goal difference than Vietnam proved decisive

Christensen’s Two Goals Give the Philippines a 2-1 Victory

The match between Thailand and the Philippines started 30 minutes late because of heavy rain. Bjorn Kristensen of the Philippine national football team gave his team the lead by scoring in the 3rd minute of the first half.

Thailand equalized through Eklas Sanron’s goal in the 55th minute of the second half. However, Christensen scored again in the 68th minute, giving the Philippines a 2-1 victory. The Philippines had 7 shots on target to Thailand’s 6, and Thailand held a slight edge in possession, detiksport reported.

The Philippines won, but the result of this match alone did not change which team from Group B advanced to the final. Despite the defeat, Thailand retained 6 points from the group stage and led Vietnam, which had the same number of points, on goal difference.

The +5 Difference Left by the 2-0 Victory over Vietnam

Thailand defeated the Vietnamese national football team 2-0 on September 30. Thailand’s Sarach Yooyen opened the scoring with a volley from outside the penalty area in the 10th minute of the first half, while Vietnam’s Nguyen Thai Loc’s goal was disallowed after a video assistant referee (VAR) review, Tribrata News reported.

After completing their match against the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam both had 6 points. However, Thailand’s goal difference was +5, while Vietnam’s was +1. Looking only at Thailand’s one-match loss to the Philippines, the standings may appear to have been unsettled, but the difference secured by the 2-0 victory over Vietnam determined first place in the group.

Thailand’s group-stage record in this tournament was not unbeaten. Even so, qualification for the final was determined by combining points and goal difference across the entire group stage, rather than by the result of a single final match.

Final against Indonesia Scheduled for October 5

According to a detiksport report, Thailand are scheduled to play the Indonesian national football team in the final at 8 p.m. WIB on October 5. Earlier that day, Malaysia and Vietnam are scheduled to play the third-place match.

The Philippines’ 2-1 victory was a clear result for the Philippines. For Thailand, however, the conditions for reaching the final remained even after the defeat, and the figure that created those conditions was a goal difference 4 goals higher than Vietnam’s.
