British novelist and former Conservative Party Member of Parliament Jeffrey Archer has died at the age of 86.
Regardless of the twists and turns of his political career, he was an author whose novels were read around the world.
News of his death came one day before the publication of his final novel.
3-Line Summary
1. Jeffrey Archer has died at the age of 86
2. He sold 3억 copies across 49 language markets
3. His political history and literary career should be considered separately
Bestselling Author Dies at Home
Publisher HarperCollins said Jeffrey Archer died suddenly and peacefully at home on Monday, between writing sessions. He was a figure with two parallel careers—as a politician and as a writer. He served as a Member of Parliament for 5 years and also served as deputy chairman of the Conservative Party; in 1992, he became a life peer.
His start as a writer came with the 1976 novel *Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less*. He subsequently gained a broad readership with works including *Kane and Abel*. The Guardian reported that he sold 3억 copies of his books in 119 countries and 49 language markets, and that *Kane and Abel* has sold more than 3천만 copies to date.
The figures alone point to enormous success, but Archer’s life is difficult to summarize solely through his sales record. A court case from his time as a politician resulted in convictions for perjury and obstruction of justice, and he was sentenced to 4 years in prison. After being released early in 2003, he returned to the House of Lords. He retired from the House of Lords in 2024.
Just Before the Publication of His Final Novel, *Adam and Eve*
Archer’s final novel, *Adam and Eve*, was scheduled for publication on 10월 6일. The BBC introduced the book as a love story centered on a young couple named Adam and Eve, set against Hitler’s dilemma over whether to invade Britain.
Regarding why he had designated this book as his final work, he said, in essence, that it was important to know when to step away from life. According to the BBC, he revised the manuscript by hand 18 times. The fact that he continued revising even ahead of his final book shows that his long-established writing process remained in place to the end.
The day before his death, he attended a sold-out event with broadcaster Gyles Brandreth at the Leicester Square Theatre in London and signed books for hundreds of readers. Kate Elton, chief executive and publisher of HarperCollins UK, remembered him as an exceptionally diligent writer who valued the publishing work that turns people into a team.
The Writer’s Record and the Politician’s Record
When remembering Archer, we must consider two different records together. On one side is the career of a storyteller who drew readers for decades; on the other is a history in which his political career effectively ended with a criminal conviction. Rather than allowing one side to erase the other, it is more accurate to read his work and public life separately within the full record of what has been established.
