Mercedes' George Russell claimed pole position in the Formula One (F1) Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying held at the street circuit in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
His teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli hit the wall at Turn 1 during the first qualifying session (Q1), sustaining significant damage to his car, and finished in 16th. The two are also rivals competing for this season's championship, and the stark contrast in their qualifying performances is drawing attention ahead of Saturday's main race.

Qualifying Results: Mercedes at Both Extremes
According to BBC and Guardian reports, Russell secured pole position with a time of 1 minute 42 seconds 526, beating second-place Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) by 0.837 seconds. This was the largest gap among pole position records this season, and Russell himself said it was "the largest gap throughout my career." Oscar Piastri (McLaren) took third, while Isak Hazari (Red Bull) and Lando Norris (McLaren) claimed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Antonelli, meanwhile, turned into the corner too early on his second lap in the early stages of the session, causing his left front wheel to strike the inside wall. Suspension components were damaged, and he was forced to stop the car on his engineer's instruction. Antonelli called it his first major mistake since the Australian Grand Prix this season, saying he was "very angry."
81-Point Gap, but the Race Isn't Over
Despite this mistake, Antonelli's championship lead itself remains secure. The points gap with Russell stands at 81 points, a margin that cannot be overturned by one qualifying session. However, how significantly this qualifying grid will impact the main race result remains to be seen. The Baku circuit is known for its long straights and relatively abundant overtaking opportunities. Antonelli has also previously started from 19th at the Monza Grand Prix and gone on to win. Mercedes assistant team principal Bradley Lloyd said, "If we manage the race calmly in the early stages tomorrow, there is ample potential to recover positions." Antonelli himself stated, "Russell has performed really well. We'll do our best to regain as many positions as possible."
In the lower end of qualifying, Williams' Carlos Sainz successfully entered the top 10 for the first time this season, but was found to have failed to slow under yellow flag conditions and received a five-place grid penalty.
