3-line summary
1. The explosion at a Hannover residence injured 8 people
2. 1 residence is uninhabitable
3. The suspected gas explosion is not a conclusion
8 injured, including 1 seriously
A fire broke out after an explosion at a multi-unit residential building near Dannenbergstraße in Hannover’s Ricklingen district. Several emergency calls reportedly mentioned a loud explosion and smoke rising into the air. Part of the 2nd floor burned, while windows and sections of the building were damaged and fell onto the road.
According to reports by NDR and WELT, citing a statement from the fire department, there were 8 injured people in total. Among them, 1 36-year-old man suffered serious injuries, while 3 men aged 31, 58, and 68 were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. The remaining 4 people sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Firefighters found the seriously injured man in front of the building. Up to approximately 50 firefighters and rescue personnel were deployed at the scene along with more than 20 vehicles. An injured cat was also taken to the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover for treatment.
Main affected building uninhabitable; 4 neighboring buildings also damaged
The building where the explosion and fire were concentrated sustained structural damage, and part of the ceiling collapsed. The fire department said the residence is currently uninhabitable. Residents will stay at another location arranged by the building’s owner.
Damage was also found at 4 other nearby buildings. However, according to the fire department, those buildings remain habitable. A building safety expert came to the scene to assess the extent of the damage to the building where the explosion occurred and to the nearby buildings.
This distinction is important. Although the damage spread to the surrounding area, the determination that a building was uninhabitable applied to the residence directly affected by the explosion and fire. The monetary value of the damage has not yet been announced.
Police suspect gas explosion, but cause remains unconfirmed
Police are investigating the cause of the accident, and NDR reported that they initially believe it was a gas explosion. However, this is an investigation-stage suspicion, and the final cause has not been confirmed. WELT also reported that it is not yet known why the explosion occurred.
The impact of the explosion also affected nearby traffic. Hannover Stadtbahn lines 3, 7, 13, and 17 were affected for a time. What has been confirmed with certainty in this incident is the injury of 8 people and damage to the buildings; the cause of the explosion must await the results of the police investigation.
