Accident Between Sorriso and Lucas do Rio Verde
The accident occurred on the afternoon of September 25 at kilometer 702 near Sorriso on Brazil’s federal BR-163 highway. The site was reported to be approximately 15 km from Lucas do Rio Verde. The two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions when they collided.
According to Perrengue Mato Grosso, the truck was traveling toward Sorriso, while the pickup truck was heading toward Lucas do Rio Verde. Because of the force of the impact, two people died at the scene, and two received treatment from rescue personnel. The stretch was closed for rescue and accident-response efforts, which also affected the flow of nearby traffic.
Immediately after the accident, details about why the two vehicles collided were not released. Therefore, although the direction of travel and the casualties were known, it was not yet possible to definitively identify the direct cause of the collision.
The Deceased Couple and Their Rescued Daughter
Rádio Difusora do Paraná identified the deceased as Cleuzir Darcy Barreto (58) and his wife, Ira Leonida Werkhausen Barreto (59). The two had previously operated businesses in the Marechal Cândido Rondon area and were described as operating a company called JK Empreendimentos in Sorriso at the time.
The couple was traveling in a Volkswagen Amarok pickup truck from Sorriso to Lucas do Rio Verde. Their daughter, Kauany Barreto, who was seated in the back seat, survived, received emergency rescue care, and was taken to São Lucas Hospital in Lucas do Rio Verde, the outlet reported.
The initial investigation at the scene raised the possibility that the truck approaching from the opposite direction had crossed into the vehicle’s lane. The possibility that the truck driver experienced a sudden health problem was also reported as one of the investigative hypotheses, but it cannot be deemed the cause of the accident until officially confirmed through technical examination. No official update has been released on the subsequent health conditions of the surviving daughter and the truck driver.
Outstanding Questions Before the Cause Is Determined
The key facts confirmed in this accident are that a truck and a pickup truck traveling in opposite directions collided, leaving two people dead and two rescued. By contrast, the circumstances of the lane departure and the driver’s condition require investigation.
Because the accident site was on a major stretch of highway between the two cities, traffic controls were implemented immediately, but the traffic restrictions themselves do not explain the cause. Only after follow-up forensic examination results are available will it be possible to distinguish the vehicles’ movements immediately before the collision from the direct cause of the accident.
