Brazil’s Ministry of Health’s new blood donation criteria took effect on September 30.
The waiting period after tattoos or cosmetic procedures and the conditions for donors over age 70 have changed.
However, whether someone can actually donate is determined by the blood center after evaluating the safety of the procedure and the person’s health status.
3-Line Summary
1. Donation is allowed 7 days after a tattoo, subject to conditions
2. If safety cannot be confirmed, the period is 4 months
3. The final decision is made through the blood center’s screening
7 Days After Tattoos or Botox, When Safety Can Be Confirmed
Brazil’s Ministry of Health’s Portaria GM/MS 11.685/2026 changed the eligibility criteria for blood donors. According to reports by G1 and Agência Brasil, people who have undergone invasive skin procedures such as tattoos, acupuncture, semipermanent makeup, Botox, fillers, or microneedling may donate 7 days after the procedure if its safety can be evaluated.
As before, the fact that someone underwent a procedure does not automatically require them to wait several months. Conversely, if it is impossible to confirm the environment in which the procedure was performed, the donation restriction period is 4 months. Whether safety can be confirmed is the key point of the new criteria.
Piercings in the mouth or genital area make a person ineligible to donate while the jewelry is still in place; after it is removed, they must wait 4 months. The restriction period after an endoscopy has also been set at 4 months.
“Repeat Donors” Can Still Be Evaluated After Age 70
The new rules do not automatically exclude people over age 70 from blood donation. People who have already donated repeatedly may continue donating if they undergo a clinical evaluation by the blood center and comply with the donation interval and frequency criteria applicable to that age group.
However, this does not mean that anyone can make their first donation after turning 70. G1 reported that the upper age limit for first-time donors remains 60 years and 11 months. The change involves considering health status, past donation history, and donation intervals together.
A History of Sharing Needles Matters More Than GLP-1 Injections
The use of GLP-1 agonist injections, including semaglutide, is not by itself an automatic reason for restriction. Even people receiving treatment using injection pens such as Ozempic or Mounjaro are not immediately deemed ineligible merely because they use the medication.
The restriction applies to people with a history of sharing an administration device with another person; in such cases, a 4-month restriction applies. All medications currently being taken or administered are evaluated individually during screening, based not only on the drug ingredients but also on the health condition for which they were prescribed.
The Caxias do Sul Regional Blood Center stated in guidance effective October 1 that the waiting period for donation after some cosmetic procedures is 4 months. Even when the same new criteria are applied, on-site guidance may differ, so before donating, it is safer to directly disclose and confirm your procedure and treatment history with the blood center you plan to visit.
