Match Tiebreak Lead Reached 7-2
Hsieh Su-wei and Liang En-shuo defeated Chan Hao-ching and Wu Fang-hsien 2-1 in sets in the women’s doubles tennis final at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. They took the first set 6-4 and dropped the second set 4-6. They won the final match tiebreak 10-5.
According to a report by public broadcaster PTS, Chan Hao-ching and Wu Fang-hsien took a 3-0 lead early in the first set, but Hsieh Su-wei and Liang En-shuo fought back to 4-4. Then, after fending off four game points from their opponents in the 10th game, they converted a break and closed out the set.
The second set remained even through 3-3. Chan Hao-ching and Wu Fang-hsien moved ahead with a break in the 7th game and leveled the match by winning the 10th game. The decisive moment in the final came in the third set. Hsieh Su-wei and Liang En-shuo pulled away to 7-2 amid a series of volley errors by their opponents and maintained their lead even after allowing a comeback.
This is the first Asian Games women’s doubles gold medal for each of the two players. Chan Hao-ching and Wu Fang-hsien received the silver medal. Taiwan’s women’s doubles team also set a record by taking both the gold and silver medals at two consecutive Games.
Conflicting Accounts Emerged After the Greeting Scene
After the final, attention focused not only on the medals but also on the players’ greeting scene. According to a Yahoo Sports report, Chan Hao-ching said that she extended her hand to Hsieh Su-wei first after the match but did not receive a response. She explained that she had decided to shake hands because it was a national team match.
Chan Hao-ching also said, in essence, that it was difficult to play while Hsieh Cheng-ying, the head coach of Taiwan’s tennis team, supported the opponents during the match. In a report by Liberty Sports, she likewise expressed regret, saying she heard this kind of cheering while attempting to catch up in the third set. Coach Hsieh Cheng-ying, however, explained that he cheered for both sides when there was good play and asked people not to diminish the players’ efforts.
What has been confirmed is the final score and the medal result. Since the meaning of the handshake scene and the cheering is an issue on which the parties involved have offered differing explanations, it is difficult to state it with the same certainty as the match details. Hsieh Su-wei also added a bronze medal in mixed doubles, finishing the Games with 1 gold and 1 bronze individually.
