LG Uplus and Woori Bank announced on October 6 that they will provide a service linking voice-phishing risk information in real time.
The plan is to strengthen the bank’s response at the stage when a suspicious call is detected, rather than after a remittance or transfer has taken place.
The criteria used to block actual transactions and the measures taken with customers will vary according to the bank’s internal procedures.
3-line summary
1. Woori Bank receives call risk information
2. It strengthens transaction monitoring after suspicious calls
3. Whether transactions are blocked depends on the bank’s procedures
When a suspicious call is detected, information is sent to Woori Bank
LG Uplus and Woori Bank announced that they will provide the “ixi-O Voice Phishing Financial Safety” service. When a voice-phishing-suspected call is detected from an ixi-O customer, the related risk information is sent to Woori Bank in real time.
Existing voice-phishing responses in the financial sector have focused on financial transaction information, such as account transfers. However, financial companies alone have had difficulty identifying risk signals that may appear before a remittance, such as calls with a suspicious number, signs of infection by a malicious app, or calls involving AI-modified voices.
The key point of this integration is that information captured at the call stage by the telecommunications company is connected to the bank’s customer-protection system. When a financial transaction occurs involving a customer for whom call-related risk has been detected, the structure enables Woori Bank to examine it more carefully than usual.
This is not a service that automatically blocks transactions
Woori Bank plans to strengthen the monitoring level of its Fraud Detection System (FDS) for customers whose risk information it receives. It explained that when a suspicious transaction occurs, it will take protective measures under the financial company’s internal procedures, such as additional identity verification or customer notification.
Therefore, the detection of a suspicious call alone does not mean that all transactions will be blocked uniformly. Actual measures appear to be taken based on suspicious signs detected in subsequent transactions and the bank’s decision-making procedures. The value of the service lies in shortening the time between a call and a transaction, thereby increasing opportunities for verification before damage occurs.
The two companies signed a business agreement on preventing voice-phishing losses in August last year and have shared information on new financial-fraud methods and responses. The companies explained that, following pilot operations and technical verification, they established an integrated system that reflects risk information from the telecommunications sector in real time within the financial sector’s customer-protection system.
The point targeted by connecting telecommunications and finance
Voice phishing can begin with a call and lead to financial losses such as loans or transfers. Even if a risk signal is detected at the telecommunications stage, the bank may lack sufficient information to respond when the customer attempts a transaction if it is unaware of that signal.
This service is an attempt to reduce that gap. LG Uplus detects the information, Woori Bank receives it and strengthens transaction monitoring, and, when necessary, conducts identity verification or provides guidance. It is important to distinguish this from a confirmed result showing that losses were prevented: it is a customer-protection system established by the two companies.
LG Uplus announced that it is also considering expanding the financial institutions linked to the system and providing a previously registered guardian with information about the risk situation and how to respond when a dangerous situation is detected during a call. This remains at the planning or review stage and is distinct from the current integrated service with Woori Bank.
