KakaoBank approved the largest number of in-house debt adjustments in the banking sector in the first half of 2026.
Gimhae City has begun linking institutions to provide support for both debt problems and mental-health crises.
Each case shows that daily life and economic activity must continue even after debt adjustment.
3-Line Summary
1. Debt adjustment is a system for resetting repayment terms.
2. KakaoBank’s number of approved cases was 7,789 (7789).
3. Supporting people’s lives after adjustment is also an important task.
What KakaoBank’s 7,789 (7789) Approvals Show about Accessibility
According to FETV, KakaoBank’s number of in-house debt-adjustment approvals in the first half of this year was 7,789, the highest among the banks included in the data. This represented 36.3% of the total 21,449 approvals by all banks, or 2만1,449 (1449). Approval for debt adjustment does not mean that everyone who applied received the same terms; it reflects the results of reviewing each applicant’s circumstances.
Last year, KakaoBank shifted the debt-adjustment application and document-submission procedures to mobile. According to the report, it supports extending the repayment period and deferring or reducing principal repayment. When terms are changed through refinancing, the repayment period can be extended for up to 10 years, while principal repayment can be deferred for up to 3 years. Principal reductions also have a maximum limit of 60%, so the terms actually applied and the size of the reduction may differ by individual.
Why Gimhae City Linked Debt and Mental Health
On September 9, the Gimhae City Mental Health Welfare Center and the Gimhae Branch of the Credit Counseling & Recovery Service signed a memorandum of understanding to link debt-adjustment, individual rehabilitation, and bankruptcy support with mental-health counseling and suicide-prevention services. This reflects in the support system the fact that economic crises and mental-health problems can occur together in one person.
According to Newstown, the two institutions plan to connect citizens in need with one another and jointly promote counselor training and public awareness of relevant systems. Because this agreement is an announcement and plan to establish a support system, it cannot be regarded as a confirmed result that the same support will be provided immediately in every case. However, it clearly shows that debt problems can affect daily life and health beyond simple repayment calculations.
Life Problems That Remain after Debt Adjustment
On September 9, KAMCO stated that it is linking its debt-adjustment programs with employment, business-startup, and credit-recovery support. The underlying assessment is that even people who receive debt adjustment may need emergency funds for living expenses or medical costs and may face difficulties with credit transactions and economic activity because of past delinquency records.
According to Financial News, KAMCO provides emergency living expenses needed for medical care, education, housing, and other purposes to economically struggling people who enter into new agreements. It also supports the issuance of a check card or a credit card with a limit of 30만 원 to people who have made diligent repayments for a certain period. This means that when evaluating the results of debt adjustment, it is necessary to consider not only reductions or maturity extensions but also the living foundation that enables people to continue repaying after the adjustment.
