Why the Film *Case Closed* Drew Attention Again After 90,000 Theatergoers and Reaching No. 1 on Netflix

Director Park Cheol-hwan’s crime investigation film *Case Closed* ranked No. 1 on Netflix’s “Today’s TOP 10 Movies in South Korea” on September 24.

This change came about five months after its theatrical release on April 2.

Why was this film, which passed quietly through theaters, selected again as a holiday release?

3-Line Summary
1. *Case Closed* ranked No. 1 on Netflix on September 24
2. This change came about five months after its April release
3. Theater performance and OTT rankings can differ

A 97-Minute Investigation Drama That Reopens an Already Closed Murder Case

*Case Closed* follows Jae-hyeok, a veteran detective demoted to the countryside, and Jung-ho, a rookie detective and former influencer, as they retrace a murder case in Seoul’s Gangnam district. The investigation begins when, after catching a thief who stole from a rural church’s offering box, they discover that he is a prime suspect in a murder case that had already been closed.

In the film, the case is treated as resolved after the perpetrator is arrested. However, Jae-hyeok and Jung-ho question the existing investigative findings and head to Seoul, requesting cooperation from the Gangnam Police Station with the support of Mi-ju, the prosecutor in charge. The story centers on revisiting the allegations against two suspects and a person who has already been imprisoned.

This is director Park Cheol-hwan’s first feature film, starring Bae Seong-woo, Jung Ga-ram, Esom, Yoon Kyung-ho, and Jo Han-chul, among others. The running time is 97 minutes, and it is rated for viewers aged 15 and over. The film places pursuit and twists within the framework of a buddy investigation story built around the conflict and cooperation between two detectives.

Between Its April Theatrical Release and September OTT Release

The film completed filming in 2019, but its release was delayed as the COVID-19 pandemic coincided with lead actor Bae Seong-woo being caught driving under the influence. It was initially known under the title *Business Trip Investigation*, but the title was changed to *Case Closed* after the release schedule was set.

The film ultimately opened in theaters on April 2, 2026. The Korea Lecturer Newspaper described its cumulative audience as 91,000, while other reports put the figure at approximately 85,000. Although the difference in the timing of the counts may have played a role, both reports agree that its theatrical performance was not substantial.

By contrast, it ranked No. 1 on Netflix on September 24. Wikitree reported that it was introduced as a release ahead of the Chuseok holiday and mentioned that its 97-minute length, investigation-drama genre, and cast may have made it an appealing viewing option during the holiday. However, this is an interpretation in the reporting, and no single cause for the rise in rankings has been confirmed.

What is notable in this case is that theater attendance and OTT response do not necessarily move in the same way. Even a work that failed to reach enough viewers at the time of its release can find new audiences when the timing of its release and the viewing environment are different. *Case Closed*’s No. 1 ranking on Netflix is an example of that change becoming visible.
