The broadcaster also corrected the facts, conveying that Blue House personnel matters are handled by the senior secretary for personnel. Therefore, it is not possible to conclude from this remark alone that Chief Kim was involved in personnel recommendations, vetting, or decisions.
Differing Claims Over the Appointment of Candidate Yong Hye-in
People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk mentioned the remark in a Facebook post on September 5 and claimed that Chief Kim might be behind the controversy over the nomination of Yong Hye-in as candidate for minister of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and her refusal to resign her proportional-representation parliamentary seat. Jang described this as Chief Kim’s construction of a “left-wing cartel” and advanced a claim to the effect that the Blue House would have known about the circumstances.
People Power Party lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun also said that the name Kim Hyun-ji was repeatedly appearing in the personnel controversy despite not being part of the official personnel line, and demanded that any private intervention be cut off or, if there had been none, explained to the public. Senior spokesperson Park Seong-hun criticized the Cabinet reshuffle appointments, including candidate Yong, and called for the withdrawal of the nomination and an apology.
In contrast, Democratic Party of Korea spokesperson Lee Yong-woo countered that Seo had explained it was a joke and that the broadcaster had also corrected the matter by stating that the senior secretary for personnel was responsible, calling the expansion and overinterpretation of an unverified remark a political offensive. Spokesperson Lee criticized the claim concerning candidate Yong, saying it could not substitute for verification.
