The nominee’s personal answers, the government’s basic plan, and the outcome of an actual institutional reform need to be considered separately.

At the National Assembly’s National Defense Committee confirmation hearing for nominee Kang scheduled for 16, his military command experience and capability to carry out defense policy were also mentioned as subjects for verification. The integration of the military academies may be addressed as one element of the nominee’s defense-policy vision.

Integration Debate Also Draws Opposition

KBS reported that the opposition party is against integrating the military academies. The Korea Military Academy Alumni Association has previously stated that it would await the results of the police investigation concerning a Korea Military Academy graduate who protested the integration policy.

The issues surrounding the integration plan do not stop at slogans for or against it. Since the government has presented a four-year academy in Daejeon’s Jaunde as its basic plan, how the curriculum to be proposed going forward will reflect the characteristics of each military branch may become a key issue. What is clear at this stage is that an integration plan and the nominee’s supportive position exist; the final outcome of the institutional reform has not yet been confirmed.
