Gold Prices Have Fallen for Three Days, but That Does Not Mean Gold Bars Are Cheaper to Buy

News that the price of one don of gold has fallen for a third straight day may immediately sound like “now is the opportunity” to someone looking to buy gold.

However, a daily move in quoted prices and the actual terms for purchasing gold bars are not the same issue.

You need to consider domestic quoted prices, product units, sales fees, and physical delivery methods separately.

3-line summary
1. The price of one don of gold has fallen for three straight days
2. It is 4.4% higher than the 30-day average
3. Gold prices and gold-bar terms should be considered separately

76만7513 won per don, with the short-term trend declining

As of the 28th, the domestic price of 1 don of gold was 76만7513 won, according to a report by Top Star News citing the Korea Exchange Information Data System. It fell 3675 won, or 0.5%, from the previous day. It has declined for three consecutive days since the 25th.

However, this figure alone makes it difficult to conclude that gold prices are in a low range. In the same report, the price on the 28th was 0.4% lower than the recent 7-day average, but 4.4% higher than the 30-day average. In other words, although it has declined for several days, it remains at a higher level on a one-month basis.

The price was 78만1125 won on the 25th, then fell to 77만8125 won on the 26th, 77만1188 won on the 27th, and 76만7513 won on the 28th. The point to note this time is not simply the word “decline,” but that the direction indicated differs depending on the comparison period.

Compared with the highest price in the past year, the price on the 28th was reported to be 24.1% lower and 37.3% higher than the lowest price. The fact that it exceeds the 30-day average and the conclusion that it is at the year’s highest level are different statements. This is why, when looking at gold prices, you should check both the reference date and the comparison target.

The international benchmark and the domestic per-don price also did not match

As of 9 a.m. on the same day, the domestic benchmark for international gold prices was 76만7091 won per 3.75 grams, up 88 won and effectively flat. In contrast, the domestic price of 1 don of gold fell 0.5%. Even when referring to the same gold, movements in domestic quoted prices and the international benchmark did not necessarily match.

The report identified the won-dollar exchange rate, U.S. long-term Treasury yields, the Jackson Hole speech, and inflation and interest-rate signals as variables to watch together. This does not mean any particular direction is guaranteed. Because gold is an asset that does not pay interest, the interest-rate level may be one factor in assessing its relative appeal.

It is also worth being cautious about interpreting overseas spot and futures gold prices and the domestic per-don price as a single continuous line. When checking prices, it is better first to see what unit is being used, which quoted-price benchmark it is, and when the figure is from.

Online orders from September 10, with physical pickup at branches

If you are considering buying a gold bar immediately after checking gold prices, you should also separately check the transaction method. According to a Herald Business report, KB Kookmin Bank plans to accept gold-bar orders through the KB Star Banking app starting September 10. Even when ordered through the app, physical pickup is available only at branches.

This also means that gold prices are not the same as product prices for items whose purchase is completed through online ordering alone. Bank gold bars come in product units, and the report says that 1-kilogram and 100-gram products carry 4.9% sales fees, while 10-gram products carry a 6% sales-fee rate. Woori Bank was reported to also handle one-don (3.75-gram) products.

Therefore, you cannot determine the actual amount you will spend by looking only at the per-don price on a price screen. You need to check the weight of the product you are buying, the sales fee, when ordering is available, and where physical pickup takes place. Even on a day when gold prices fall, it does not automatically follow that the terms of the product you choose have also become more favorable.

The most practical standard in this situation is simple: consider quoted prices as quoted prices, and gold bars according to their purchase terms. If you align the units and benchmarks before focusing on the direction of the price, you are also less likely to be swayed by the large number in the headline.

Standards for reading the next announcement

It is difficult to reach a conclusion from gold-related news based on just one number or one sentence. The meaning becomes clearer if you separate who made the announcement, whether it concerns a fact already implemented or a future plan, and whether the target and timing are presented specifically.

Even within the same material, an explanation of necessity, discussion, a plan to proceed, and actual implementation may be different stages. Even if the scale of an announcement appears large, you should check together what it covers and what procedures remain, so as not to overstate or understate the current situation.

In the next report, you can compare whether a new announcement merely repeats existing content or whether the target, schedule, or implementation status has actually changed. Reviewing the related reports below together can also help identify differences in wording that are easy to miss from the headline alone.
