However, this record is not an announcement that guarantees the complete list of the iPhone 17 Pro’s camera capabilities. CNET brought up the case while pointing out the professional filming features of the newly unveiled iPhone 18 Pro. In other words, reading the previous model’s use case and the follow-up product’s announcement as one package can blur what was actually possible and what was newly presented.

At the event, Apple promoted the iPhone 18 Pro as suitable for professional film sets. It introduced the new Pro Controls as including options for handling aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and exposure. These are areas needed when a person filming wants to directly adjust the brightness of the screen, the standard for color, and the amount of time light is received.

The case of the iPhone 17 Pro being used for broadcasting is therefore even more interesting. It does not mean that the device handled everything with only one camera app; rather, it means that it was operated together with a separate Blackmagic Camera app. When discussing broadcast use, which device was used matters as much as which app was used.

Screen Settings and Sound Settings Are Not the Same Problem

CNET pointed out that the iPhone 18 Pro’s camera app lacks an audio meter, microphone selection, headphone monitoring, and timecode. An audio meter is a display that allows users to check sound levels visually, while microphone selection is the function for choosing which input to receive. Headphone monitoring is connected to directly listening on site to the sound being recorded.

This is why even if features for changing exposure on the screen and matching colors are added, sound monitoring remains a separate issue. In video filming, the screen may appear normal even when the audio is too quiet or excessively loud. CNET’s criticism does not contradict the precedent of the iPhone 17 Pro being used for a live broadcast; rather, it is closer to the point that the precedent does not account for all the conditions of professional production.

According to the same report, the Blackmagic Camera app provides meters and adjustable levels, external microphone support, monitoring, and Bluetooth timecode. Apple’s Final Cut Camera app also reportedly supports timecode. Timecode is a standard used to synchronize the times of multiple pieces of equipment when organizing video and sound.

The important comparison here is not the number of cameras or pixels on the iPhone 17 Pro. In the actual broadcast case, the app supplemented certain capabilities, while the follow-up product’s standard camera app added filming settings. Placing these two facts side by side reveals that device performance and control features in the production environment are different questions.

Apple’s 35% Is a Sustained-Performance Comparison

At this event, Apple announced that it had equipped the foldable phone iPhone Duo with an A20 Pro chip and a large vapor chamber. According to Apple’s explanation, this combination can deliver up to 35% higher sustained performance compared with the iPhone 17 Pro. This is a comparison figure presented by Apple and cannot be expanded to mean that the entire user experience of the iPhone 17 Pro changes by that amount.

The expression “sustained performance” also needs to be considered separately. It does not refer only to the operating speed at a brief moment, but describes a situation in which performance is maintained continuously. Since it was presented in combination with the iPhone Duo’s vapor chamber, this figure is not an independent filming evaluation of the iPhone 17 Pro but a comparison announced for the follow-up device.

CNET assessed that the hardware had already shown potential, citing the iPhone 17 Pro’s use in broadcasting together with Blackmagic Camera. At the same time, it emphasized that a professional filming environment also requires a sound department. Ultimately, the scene of four iPhones being used for a broadcast is a strong example, but it does not replace the camera app’s feature list.

This mention of the iPhone 17 Pro is a peripheral case accompanying the announcement of a new product. The conclusion that remains from the case is simple. The history of live-broadcast use is confirmed, but filming quality must be considered together with not only screen settings but also sound input and monitoring, as well as time synchronization.
