3-Line Summary

2. The National Assembly’s Commission III unanimously approved him
3. The plenary session process remains after the commission’s approval

Nominated in a September 30 Presidential Letter

Suyudi Ario Seto is a senior police official currently serving as head of Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN). According to CNBC Indonesia, President Prabowo nominated him to the National Assembly as a candidate for chief of the Indonesian National Police.

The nomination was contained in a presidential letter dated September 30. Habiburokhman, chairman of the National Assembly’s Commission III, said at a meeting held on October 1 at the National Assembly building in Senayan, Central Jakarta, that the National Assembly had received the presidential letter. He explained that the letter addressed both a proposal to dismiss the current police chief and a proposal to appoint a new police chief.

The official targeted for replacement is Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo. After the president’s nomination, the National Assembly held internal consultations and decided to conduct an eligibility review of candidate Suyudi that same morning. CNBC Indonesia reported that a meeting of the National Assembly’s operating body also decided to hold the review. In effect, the president’s nomination and the National Assembly’s review followed one another on the same day.

Unanimous Approval Following the Eligibility Review

According to DetikNews, the National Assembly’s Commission III unanimously approved candidate Suyudi during the eligibility review. When the chairman asked whether there was unanimous agreement, the lawmakers agreed, and the meeting then concluded.

The commission said it would submit the agenda item approving the replacement of the police chief to a plenary session of the National Assembly. Accordingly, the stages confirmed in reports that day are the president’s nomination, the Commission III review and approval, and the transfer of the agenda item to the plenary session. The commission’s unanimous approval is an important judgment regarding the candidate, but the reported plenary-session handling and the actual appointment are separate subsequent procedures.

Before heading the National Narcotics Agency, candidate Suyudi served as chief of the Banten Regional Police. The change confirmed in this appointment is that the person who led the National Narcotics Agency was nominated as a candidate for national police chief and received the approval of a standing committee of the National Assembly. What decision is made at the subsequent plenary session will be the next stage in replacing the head of the police.
