3-line summary
1. A 19-year-old driver died at the scene in the accident
2. The vehicle struck a streetlight and several trees
3. The cause of the accident is still under investigation

The vehicle departed after a report at 0:35 a.m.

Early Saturday morning in the Wenden area of Braunschweig, a vehicle driven by a 19-year-old man left the road and struck a streetlight and several trees. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

According to a report by Braunschweiger Zeitung, witnesses reported to police at around 0:35 a.m. that a young man was trying to drive after drinking alcohol. When police officers arrived, he was already inside the vehicle, and although police tried to prevent it from departing, the vehicle left.

NDR and WELT also reported that police followed the vehicle but soon lost sight of it. The claim that the driver had been drinking is based on witness reports and the police account; a direct causal relationship between alcohol consumption and the accident has not been established by the investigation.

The vehicle collided with a streetlight after an oncoming vehicle swerved to avoid it

The vehicle was subsequently reported to have traveled at high speed through Wenden toward Gifhorner Straße. When it entered the opposite lane near Aschenkamp, an oncoming vehicle changed direction to avoid a collision.

The identity of the driver of the oncoming vehicle is not yet known. Although that vehicle did not actually collide, the incident created an immediate danger not only inside the vehicle of the driver who died but also for road users traveling in the opposite direction.

Near the intersection with Gifhorner Straße, the vehicle left the road to the right on a gentle left-hand curve. It then collided with a streetlight and several trees, and the vehicle was reported to have been heavily damaged.

The traffic-accident unit and an expert joined the investigation

Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident. Braunschweiger Zeitung reported that the traffic-accident unit took charge of the case and also brought in an expert.

The sequence of a witness report, police attempts to prevent the departure and the pursuit, entry into the opposite lane, and leaving the road and colliding is confirmed in common by the three reports. However, why the vehicle lost control and the technical and legal conclusions of the accident have not yet been announced.

The clear outcomes of this accident are that the driver died at the scene and that the oncoming vehicle had to take evasive action. The remaining judgments about the cause need to be distinguished from the investigation that is still underway.
