When “West Indies” appears in sports results, you may find yourself looking for which country it is. But you will not find a country with that name on a map. The team that faced Pakistan this week is not a national team, but one created jointly by several countries.

It is not a country name
The West Indies cricket team brings together fifteen English-speaking Caribbean countries and territories. This includes places such as Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and Saint Lucia. Despite being a Caribbean team, it also includes Guyana, which sits on the South American continent.
Administration is shared among six associations: Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Leeward Islands and Windward Islands, which group together smaller islands.
In football, these countries compete separately. Jamaica enters World Cup qualifiers as Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago as Trinidad and Tobago. Only in cricket do they compete together. It is the result of a regional competition structure that has remained in place since the era of British colonial rule.
A single island with a population of only tens of thousands cannot assemble a team capable of competing on the world stage. Fifteen combined can. The period in the 1970~80s, when this team reigned as the world’s strongest, is proof of that.
This week in Trinidad
The second Test match of Pakistan’s 2026 tour of the West Indies was held from August 2 at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
The result was Pakistan’s 8-wicket victory. Pakistan scored 387 and 77 (with 2 wickets lost), while the West Indies scored 344 and 117.
For Pakistan, it was its first away Test victory in 3 years. It was also the first win since Babar Azam took on the Test captaincy for the second time. Because the West Indies won the first Test, the series finished 1-1.
What an “8-wicket victory” means
This is where people accustomed to football or baseball may pause. The result is recorded as a win by wickets, rather than by the margin of runs.
In cricket, each team has eleven players, and the batting side’s turn ends when ten batters are out. These outs are called wickets.
When the team that bats later wins, its victory is expressed by how many wickets remained when it passed the target score. Pakistan passed the target after losing only 2 wickets, leaving eight remaining—hence an 8-wicket victory.
The larger the number, the more comfortably the team won. In baseball terms, it is not a record of how many runs separated the teams, but of how many outs remained when the game ended.
What do they do for 5 days?
A Test match is cricket’s longest format. It can last up to 5 days.
Each day is divided into three segments of roughly two hours. There is a 40-minute lunch break, followed by a 20-minute tea break. Few sports include time for drinking tea in their rules.
The amount of bowling is also set. At least 90 overs must be bowled each day. One over consists of six deliveries, so that amounts to about 540 balls a day. Over 5 days, that is 450 overs.
Both teams bat twice. Team A bats, then Team B, then Team A again, then Team B again. That is why Pakistan had two figures in the scoreline above (387 and 77).
An ending where no one wins or loses
This is the most unfamiliar part for first-time cricket viewers.
If all 5 days are used and the final batting team’s wickets are not all taken, the match ends in a draw. That is true even if one side is ahead on runs. No matter how far behind a team is, it will not lose if it survives through the afternoon of the final day.
There are therefore moments when the losing team’s strategy becomes not “scoring runs” but “using up time.” Scenes of batters letting balls pass without hitting them can continue for hours. It may look frustrating, but many fans say this is the sport at its most tense.
The condition that a match may remain undecided even after 5 days of bowling is, paradoxically, what keeps the tension alive throughout all 5 days. Personally, I think this is cricket’s best-designed feature.
There are also 5-hour and 3-hour versions
If 5 days feels burdensome, there are other lengths. The same sport comes in three versions.
Test cricket is the 5-day format described above. One Day Internationals give each team 50 overs and finish in a day. T20 gives each team 20 overs and finishes in 3 hours.
For a first viewing, it is better to start with T20. The rules are the same, so you can get used to wickets and overs there before moving to the longer format. If you do it in reverse, you may close the window by lunchtime on the first day.
One more thing is useful to know. In cricket, “runs” are not accumulated by touching home plate as in baseball; instead, the two batters score 1 run each time they run and exchange ends. Rolling the ball beyond the boundary scores 4 runs, while hitting it over the boundary scores 6. That is why scores such as 300 and 400 appear.
If you can read the scoreboard, you are halfway there. 387 is the score, and 77/2 means 77 runs were scored while 2 wickets were lost. Once you can see those two figures, you can roughly grasp the state of the match.
In summary
The name West Indies is not a country but an agreement among fifteen Caribbean places. This week, that team split the series with Pakistan at 1-1. Just knowing that this is a sport in which a draw can result even after 5 days of bowling will make the scorecard read differently the next time you see the name.
